SUMMARY:Writing Workshop: How To Close Read a Film
DESCRIPTION:

Hello, AFVS! I If we haven’t met, my name is Nathan and I am the AFVS Department Writing Fellow this year. To learn more this position, and to schedule a one-on-one undergraduate writing consultation, see this page on the AFVS Website.

I would like to invite all AFVS students, whether you are a concentrator, secondary concentrator, or enrolled in an AFVS class, to a workshop hosted in concordance with AFVS 70, called “How To Close Read a Film,” to be held on Thurs, March 4, 7-8pm EST. An earlier version of this workshop was very popular and productive last semester. I hope that this semester’s workshop will accommodate even more student demand. (We will be close-reading a different film clip this time around.) AFVS instructors and graduate students are warmly welcome to attend, as well.

Key questions to be addressed in this workshop include: How do I choose a significant scene to write about for a course paper? How can my visceral, emotional response to a film help shape my intellectual argument? What external resources can help me learn to watch for significant film formal features? (Several will be offered.) How do I move from observing features of film form to interpreting these features for the sake of a productive argument?

If you would like to see other questions addressed, I will do my best to accommodate them! To register, please fill out this short Google form. A Zoom link will be sent on the day of the workshop. See the flyer attached for more details. I so look forward to seeing you there!

	Nathan Roberts

	AFVS Department Writing Fellow, 2020-21
