Josef Strau lives in New York and Berlin. Previous solo exhibitions include among others at Wiener Secession, Vienna 2015; Renaissance Society, Chicago 2014; Malmoe Konsthall 2008; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam 2006; House of Gaga, Mexico City, 2013; and Greene Naftali Gallery, New York, 2012 and group shows including Liverpool Biennial, 2014: CAPC, Bordeaux 2011, Manifesta 2006.
Strau is published as a writer in different catalogues and art magazines as in Isa Genzken, October Books, Wolfgang Tillmans, Serpentine Gallery, Bernadette Corporation, Koenig Publisher among others as well as in his own books and many independent produced publications. He was also the organizer of Galerie Meerrettich at the Volksbuehne, Berlin and other art spaces and co-founded recently art production companies “Montezuma”, “The Metaphysical Store” and “Single Moms” and recently is working on collaborations with Stefan Tcherepnin and Marina Rosenfeld.
His exhibited works are mainly sculptural installations that often include posters and lamps as carriers and transmitters of texts, that appears in complex layout systems, spreading on the image layer and into the space. He also uses sound and digital voices, video and painting in his highly narrative production.
