Josep Luis Sert Practitioner in the Arts

Liz Magor - Sert Practitioner 2019 - with students

The Josep Luis Sert Practitioner in the Arts position was created in 1986, inviting visiting artists in all media to spend several days in formal and informal activities appropriate to the Department of Art, Film, and Visual Studies, including lectures, demonstrations, screenings, seminars, readings, performances, and close work with students of the Department. The Sert Practitioner is made possible by a gift from Robert Gardner, former director of the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, director of the Film Study Center, and chair of the Department.

Practitioners are nominated through a Department-wide open call which is then considered by the AFVS Visiting Artists Committee, comprised of members representing all areas of the Department, including graduate and undergraduate students. An undergraduate student is invited to serve as the Sert Practitioner Undergraduate Liaison, a compensated position that works closely with the Practitioner during their residency.

If you are a current AFVS concentrator or a current Film and Visual Studies PhD Candidate interested in serving on the AFVS Visiting Artists Committee, please contact spinneyspinney@fas.harvard.edu at the beginning of the fall term.
