AFVS welcomes Wu Tsang as the 2025 Solomon Fellow

Harvard University's Department of Art, Film, and Visual Studies (AFVS) is delighted to announce that artist Wu Tsang has been chosen as the 2025 Solomon Fellow. She will be in residence at AFVS from February 3 to 7, 2025.

Wu Tsang is an award-winning filmmaker and visual artist who combines documentary and narrative techniques with fantastical detours into the imaginary. Her projects have been presented at museums, biennials, and film and theater festivals internationally, including the Venice
Biennale (2022), Manifesta 15, Whitney Biennial (2012, 2022), SXSW (2012), Holland Festival (2022, 2024). Tsang is a 2018 MacArthur “Genius” Fellow, and she has won numerous awards including 2016 Guggenheim (Film/Video), 2018 Hugo Boss Prize Nominee, and Rockefeller Foundation. Wu Tsang received a BFA (2004) from the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) and an MFA (2010) from University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). From 2019-2024 she was a director-in-residence at the Schauspielhaus (City Theatre) Zürich. Tsang is known for her long-term collaborations, notably with Moved the Motion, a performance
collective that she co-founded with Tosh Basco in 2013.

During her residency at AFVS Tsang will share her insights with the Harvard community through class visits, critiques, and a public lecture. This lecture will take place on February 6, 2026, from 6:00 – 7:30 pm, in the Theater at the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts.

The Solomon Fellowship at AFVS invites artists, filmmakers, and critics with strong visions and voices, embedding them into the life of the Department. Fellows interact with students and faculty through class visits, workshops, and a public presentation, deepening the impact of visiting artists through student engagement. The Fellowship, a generous gift of the Solomon Family, extends visiting artists' involvement in the life of the Department and the University at large.

Fellows are nominated through a department-wide open call for nominations which are then considered by the AFVS Visiting Artists Committee, comprised of members representing all areas of the Department, including graduate and undergraduate students.
