The Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts is seeking dedicated and enthusiastic student interns to support our team in the areas of curatorial research, communications, and exhibition installation. These paid internships provide valuable hands-on experience working within a contemporary art institution and are ideal for students interested in museum studies, curatorial practice, arts administration, communications, exhibition design, and artistic practice. The semester-long internship offers professional development experience that can be applied to a CV or resume, making it an excellent opportunity for emerging artists and arts professionals looking to gain knowledge and skills. This experience will provide students with practical training and insight into the inner workings of a contemporary art institution, preparing them for future roles in museums, galleries, artist studios, arts organizations, and beyond. Internships will pay $16.50 an hour.
1. Curatorial Intern
The Curatorial Intern will work closely with the curatorial team to support exhibition research, artist projects, and archival documentation. This role is an excellent opportunity for students interested in contemporary art, research, and exhibition-making.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct research on artists, exhibitions, and historical contexts.
- Assist in maintaining curatorial archives and databases.
- Attend and take notes during curatorial meetings and studio visits.
- Assist with public programs and events related to exhibitions.
- Compile research for updated building guide.
2. Communications Intern
The Communications Intern will assist with social media management, content creation, and press outreach to enhance the Carpenter Center’s digital presence and public engagement.
Responsibilities:
- Develop creative ways to promote exhibitions, programs, and events.
- Track media coverage and compile press clippings.
- Website updates - ALT Text for accessibility
- Work on CCVA Archive - connect with Harvard Archives for correct process for storage of our archival materials.
- Research and compile content about current and past CCVA exhibitions, artists, history and contemporary art news for social media content options.
- Research and update CCVA outreach lists for press, curatorial and marketing.
- Submit exhibitions and events to calendar listings online.
3. Installation Intern
The Installation Intern will work closely with the Exhibition Manager to support the planning, preparation, and execution of exhibition installations and deinstallations.
Responsibilities:
- Maintain and organize tools, equipment, and storage spaces.
- Assist in lighting and wall preparation, including removing/applying vinyl, painting and patching.
- Assist in research of and installation of relevant technology, such as projectors, media players, etc.
- Assist in planning for and production of mounts, displays and relevant gallery furniture.
- Creating wall labels.
