This inaugural exhibition for the opening of the Art, Film, and Visual Studies Department (AFVS) gallery space at 92 Seattle Street celebrates artists who support the department as staff, teaching assistants, and instructional teaching fellows for studio and filmmaking courses. The exhibition brings together artists whose practices engage with a wide array of unresolved, complex themes—ranging from the sociological significance of multicultural myths to metaphysics, material fluidity, gender, and cultural studies. Flux(us) exhibits a diversity and depth of artistic practices and reflects the spirit of open-minded, playful experimentation found in the Fluxus movement.

 

The featured works traverse the intersections of myth, materiality, and gender, probing the complexities of human experience and perception. Each piece invites viewers to engage with layered stories—both personal and collective—offering a window into how artists negotiate and challenge conventional boundaries. Through their explorations, these artists provoke questions about how we understand our place in the world and the ever-shifting relationships between self, society, and environment. The exhibition creates a loose shimmer of dialogue, allowing diverse voices and perspectives to resonate, overlap, and subtly interact, revealing unexpected relationships and points of convergence.

 

Co-curated by artist Sharon Harper, Professor and Chair of the Department of Art, Film, and Visual Studies (AFVS) and artist Yulia Spiridonova.
