AFVS graduate student Valerie Werder’s award-winning debut novel, Thieves, is published by Fence Books

Fence Books is proud to publish Valerie Werder’s debut novel, Thieves, as part of its Fence Modern Prize in Prose Series. Described by Claire Messud as “sly, witty, and utterly compelling”; Elvia Wilk as “a gleaming gem of a novel”; and Lucy Ives as “a brain massage and heart restart,” this urbane, semi-psychedelic coming-of-age novel interrogates the consumption and reflexivity of white American young womanhood in whip-smart, sharply humorous prose. Previous winners of the Fence Modern Prize in Prose include Ottessa Moshfegh and Hilary Plum.

You can read an interview with Werder about the novel on Fence’s website and purchase Thieves via Small Press Distribution. Werder will hold readings and events throughout the fall; more details can be found on her website.
