AFVS presents a critical examination of the use of Generative AI; Screening of AI Films 10/30 at 5pm

AFVS presents a critical examination of the use of Generative AI models in contemporary experimental cinema, featuring a meticulously curated selection of works by leading filmmakers and artists. The program, curated by Antonio Somaini (Visiting Professor at AFVS, Fall 2024; Professor of Film, Media, and Visual Culture Theory at the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris), investigates the intersections of algorithmic processes and cinematic language.

The evening opens with Erik Bullot's "The Dream of Abel Gance" (2024, 10'), exploring Abel Gance's unrealized film projects, followed by Gwenola Wagon's "Chronicles of the Black Sun" (2023, 17'), which interrogates the plasticity of memory and archives. Arthur Chopin's "512x512" (2023, 21') offers an intimate, subjective interaction with Generative AI models and their ways of processing cultural memory.

The program continues with Inès Sieulle's "The Oasis I Deserve" (2023, 22'), which investigates the affective interactions between humans and chatbots, culminating in Grégory Chatonsky's "Haven: The City That Did Not Exist (1971-1973)" (2024, 29'), a mediation on the counter-factual histories that Generative AI may reveal.

Together, these works present a critical discourse on artificial intelligence's role in contemporary visual culture, challenging traditional notions of authorship, representation, and technological mediation.
