Grounded in painting, Saunders' work makes porous and provocative relationships with other forms, especially photography, printmaking and installations of animated films. One-person institutional exhibitions include the Renaissance Society (Chicago), the Tate (Liverpool), Tank Space (Shanghai) and the St. Louis Art Museum, alongside numerous gallery shows at Blum & Poe and Marian Goodman Gallery, where he is represented. His work has been seen in group exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art (NY), Whitney Museum, MassMOCA, Drawing Room (London), Deutsche Guggenheim, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Aspen Art Museum, and the 10th Sharjah Biennial, among others. It can be found in many public collections. He is the recipient of a Tiffany Foundation grant, the Prix Jean-François Prat and the 2015 deCordova Rappaport prize. Saunders earned his A.B. from the department of Visual and Environmental Studies in 1997, and his MFA from Yale in 2002, then spent many years living and working in Berlin. As a writer, Saunders has been an occasional contributor to Artforum and other publications.
