All that you touch
You change.
All that you Change
Changes you.
The only lasting truth Is Change.
God
Is Change.
- Earthseed: The Books of the Living
Hey y’all :) My name is Grey or Mari (they/them). I’m a junior in AFVS and this year’s “undergraduate liaison” for the Solomon Fellowship - big words to say that I’m working with Sondra Perry, this year’s fellow, to connect her to students through this blog and virtual programming. Throughout the spring, students have the opportunity to meet Sondra in class visits, meetings, and a students-only event at The Terrace, on March 10 at 8pm. We’ll use this space to be in conversation, posting calls-and-response, clips of Sondra and her work, and anything you want to see!
Our first call is about Change. In AFVS 126: Time out of Mind: Exploring Painting as Time Based Media (taught by Tomashi Jackson with Sondra), we’re reading Octavia Butler’s novel Parables of the Sower. The above quote was written by Lauren Olamina, the protagonist of the novel; throughout the book, Lauren writes clear and simple truths about us, God, and the living, concluding that “God Is Change.” Respond to this quote, or this image, however feels right.
I chose this picture from a collection of images that I took last semester for a sculpture project called “Sweet home.” The project was based within an oak tree, thinking about growth as connection & spaces of life.
If you’d like to respond, please upload a photo via this form. All images will be posted on a call-and-response page, updated periodically.
Thank you for reading <3 Look out for our next post: an introduction to Sondra and her work!
